View Full Version : Helm and Hsphere on the Windows side
Hello everyone,
Could anyone tell me what Helm can do but Hsphere on the Windows hosting side? I know qmail is bundled with Hsphere but is it possible to install a Windows mail server on a Windows box? This Windows mail server doesn't have to be controlled by the Hsphere software but I just want to be able to add some other Windows groupware to the Windows, does that cause any conflicts with Hsphere?
Thanks,
Mike
Could someone please give me some advice?
Thanks
Mike,
your question is a bit unclear. Especially on the email side of things.
HSphere can't do:
- sub-ftp account on windows
- creation of virtual directories
but other than that hsphere is very very good. I've never used helm.

Yes you can add other software on windows it wont conflict. You can run a email server on windows, or a monitoring program. Hsphere just wont control it. Hsphere only adds iis and ftp settings or mssql if it is on the box.
Thank you all for your answers.
Jim,
I know Hsphere doesn't support Windows mail server so that's why I asked if it would cause any conflicts with the way Hsphere manages the Windows box if I were to install a Windows mail server on the Windows box. I'm thinking about running either Merak or MDadmon mail server on the Windows box and add some groupware features to it to offer to those who only need email hosting with some groupware functionalities unless Hsphere has something similar to what I mentioned.
Best regards,
Mike
Glad I found this old thread. Maybe I can get some additional info from anyone who has some experience.
A client of mine has a Reseller account and sells only Windows hosting. He wants to have some kind of better Webmail program than what is available through Hsphere and asked if we could install Merak Mail server for him. While I am at it, I'm checking into other options too.
I suppose from the previous answers we could run seperate mail software as long as we configure it manually since Hsphere won't be able to integrate or control it.
Are there any mail packages someone would recommend? I might also consider setting up a seperate mail server entirely that runs Windows based software.
Also, if I were to try and 'fix' the Hsphere provided solutions, what could I patch onto the Hsphere mail server to give us a better web mail experience? Any comments would be appreciated.

Hi David,
Not sure what is happening with Exchange server and Hsphere 2.5. But it has an OWA client that everyone (Exchange, windows users that is) wants to use. Not sure how Exchange will work with Hsphere though. I have never used it without a proper Active Directory setup, which Hsphere (pre 2.5 for sure) does not work with.

Hi Gary,
I did tell my client we'll be getting Exchange with the new Hsphere 2.5 upgrade and that we can look forward to that, but I wasn't sure exactly when that might be coming up.
I think his main concern was the visual appeal of the Horde setup and I think he might be happy if I could put another front end on that. So I might go that route too.
I am very much looking forward to Exchange on HSphere. I will try to start selling hosted Exchange service to local small businesses once that is available.

We ran a nutsmail skin for a while (customers really liked the look and feel).
Maybe look into that for a cheap fix. Then again I have customers who REALLY like sqwebmail!
any better template for qwebmail??? it's freaking fast, but it does not display html mail properly....any the layout is not that nice to go all out to clients....
